Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra
Samsung is reportedly preparing to introduce a notable camera upgrade with its next-generation flagship smartphone. Recent leaks suggest that the company could bring back variable aperture technology with the Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra, a feature it had experimented with in earlier premium devices.
According to recent reports, Samsung is testing a 200-megapixel primary rear camera paired with a variable aperture system. If this makes it to the final device, it could significantly enhance the overall photography experience across different lighting conditions.
A variable aperture allows the camera lens to physically adjust how much light enters the sensor. In low-light environments, the aperture widens to capture more light, helping produce brighter images. In contrast, it narrows in bright conditions to reduce overexposure. This flexibility can lead to better-balanced shots, especially in portraits and close-up photography.
Samsung has previously introduced a similar concept in its earlier flagship lineup, but the upcoming implementation is expected to be more advanced and refined. The move also reflects a broader trend, as several premium smartphones have started adopting this feature in recent years.
Apple is also rumoured to be working on similar camera enhancements for its future iPhone 18 Pro models. This suggests that the competition in smartphone photography is set to intensify further.
With both brands focusing on advanced camera hardware, users can expect improved imaging capabilities and more versatile shooting options in upcoming flagship devices.
For reference, the current Galaxy S26 Ultra already offers a high-resolution 200-megapixel primary sensor as part of its quad rear camera setup. However, it relies on a fixed aperture system.
The device also includes multiple additional lenses for zoom and wide-angle photography, along with flagship-grade hardware such as a large AMOLED display, a powerful chipset, and long-lasting battery performance.
The Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra is expected to launch early next year, although the company has not officially confirmed any details so far.
If the leaks turn out to be accurate, the return of variable aperture technology could mark a significant step forward in smartphone photography, strengthening Samsung’s position in the premium smartphone segment.
