Return of the Silver Arrows: Mercedes Unveils the W17 Challenger for the 2026 F1 Season

The wait is over. Today in Brackley, Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS officially pulled the covers off the W17 E PERFORMANCE, the car they hope will reclaim their throne as the kings of Formula 1.

With the 2026 season introducing a massive overhaul in chassis and engine regulations, Mercedes is banking on their historical prowess in power unit development to leapfrog the competition.

The W17 Identity: A Masterclass in Aerodynamics

The first thing you notice about the W17 is its “nimble” profile. Under the new 2026 FIA mandates, cars are now smaller, narrower, and lighter.

• Size Reduction: The W17 is 100mm narrower and features a wheelbase shortened by 200mm.

The biggest talking point of the Mercedes F1 2026 car launch is the all-new Power Unit. Designed in Brixworth, this engine is a departure from anything seen in the sport’s history.

• Electric Revolution: The MGU-H (heat energy recovery) has been removed. To compensate, the electric output has tripled to 350kW. This creates a near 50/50 split between internal combustion and electrical power.
• Sustainable Fuel: The W17 will run on 100% sustainable “drop-in” fuel developed by PETRONAS, aiming for net-zero carbon impact without sacrificing high-octane performance.

George Russell, entering his fifth year with the team, is now the undisputed leader, while 19-year-old sensation Kimi Antonelli begins his second full season, having already proven he has the raw pace to match the veterans.
