Ranveer Singh - Pawan Kalyan
After the festive Sankranti season, theatres across the Telugu states have been witnessing a noticeable slowdown in box office performance. Several films released in recent weeks failed to attract audiences, resulting in low occupancy and disappointing collections.
This prolonged dry spell has created difficulties for exhibitors and distributors. Many buyers who invested heavily in film rights during this period have reportedly suffered financial losses as collections remained far below expectations.
Because of this situation, the trade has been eagerly waiting for a major release that can bring audiences back to theatres and revive the theatrical business.
The industry’s hopes are now pinned on two big releases scheduled for March 19 — Dhurandhar: The Revenge and Ustaad Bhagat Singh.
The Ranveer Singh-starrer Dhurandhar 2, directed by Aditya Dhar, is the sequel to a blockbuster first installment and carries huge expectations among audiences. The film is also scheduled to begin its evening premiere shows on March 18, giving it an early advantage at the box office.
Meanwhile, Ustaad Bhagat Singh, starring Pawan Kalyan, is a commercial entertainer directed by Harish Shankar. The film has generated strong buzz among fans due to the actor-director combination that previously delivered the hit Gabbar Singh.
One of the biggest advantages for these releases is the favorable festive window. The films are arriving during a period when multiple festivals — Ugadi, Ramzan, and Sri Rama Navami — fall close to each other.
Festive holidays usually lead to higher theatre attendance and stronger weekend collections, which could significantly help both films at the box office.
Another positive factor is that student examinations have recently concluded, allowing younger audiences to return to theatres. Combined with the approaching summer holiday season, this period is traditionally considered one of the most favorable windows for big-budget film releases.
With several factors aligning — two high-profile films, a strong festive period, and the start of the summer movie season — trade analysts believe that March 2026 could mark a crucial turning point for Tollywood’s theatrical business.
If Dhurandhar 2 and Ustaad Bhagat Singh manage to meet expectations at the box office, theatres across the Telugu states could finally witness a strong revival in audience turnout after weeks of sluggish performance.
Industry observers will now closely watch the opening weekend numbers to see whether these two major releases can bring the much-needed momentum back to the box office.
